Retro History

Classic 1930’s videos of the resort and activities of the time are available for your entertainment at the resort and some on this web site under Guest Sharing - Photo Gallery.

1920’s

  • A farmer decides to sell his rocky lakeside land to the Wertz family et. al. of Spencer Iowa, who begin to build lake cabins for rent.
  • Later that year a young couple just out of college, Walter G. & Mabel Benjamin of Pipestone Minnesota, accidentally drive into the area while seeking directions.  They love the location and pitch their tent.

1930’s

  • The Benjamins establish their tradition of annual family vacations at the resort.

1940’s – 1950’s

  • The Benjamins purchase Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha Resort and over 100 surrounding acres, build additional cabins and add electricity!  Swede-crafted split rock fireplace is added to log lodge #12.

1960’s

  • The 2-story log lodge #14 with similar fireplace is completed.
  • Seedlings for the great “Red Pine Forest” are planted.

1970’s

  • The first winterized cabins 7 and 11 are built.

1980’s

  • The Benjamin children assume ownership of the Resort.

1990’s – 2000’s

  • Significant improvements (roads moved, beach & office expansion) and new cabins built, for more great vacations for everyone!
  • We welcome the first non-Benjamin family, the Wagners, as they build and purchase several cabins.

Many families continue to build their own multi-generational vacation memories at Kee-Nee-Moo-Sha resort.
